The Power of One Animal Rights Group
The Power of One Animal Rights Group was founded in Fall 2003 by Katie Hammer. Katie named the club "The Power of One" for a couple reasons.... 1) she was truly inspired by one of her favorite books and movies, The Power of One, and 2) it sums up one of the big goals we hope to accomplish as a club- to show that even one person can make a difference. Every person has the power to make choices that directly affect the world around them. Where animals are concerned, we can choose to buy cruelty-free products that aren't tested on animals and support humane charities that don't test on animals, we can choose to go vegan for the animals, for our health, and for the environment (see the "Why Vegan" page for more info), we can choose to adopt from shelters instead of buying from pet stores, we can choose not to support cruel "entertainment" industries like rodeos and circuses using animal acts, and we can educate the public about animal rights issues through leafleting, tabling events on campus, protests & demonstrations, letters to the editors, documentary showings, even potlucks, and more! As Bryce Courtenay (author of The Power of One) said, "Changes can come from the power of many, but only when the many come together to form that which is invincible.... the power of one."
Mission Statement:
To educate students about animal rights, to do the part as an organization to lessen animal suffering, and to help progress the ultimate goal of the the abolishment of animal exploitation.
