"Value Meal # 2" HAHA!
Here's how Graham describes his project......
Value Meal Number 2
· The bottle of water has been glued shut and shackled tight (keys to
the locks are visible resting on the inside), representing the
drinking water that could have been used by humans, but was instead
given to cows. It takes 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of
wheat, but it takes about 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of
beef.
· The tray represents the that six square yards of rain forest were
cleared to produce just one quarter pound hamburger imported from
Latin America (where much of fast food beef comes from).
· The large fries are represented by the twigs of trees that were cut
and burned to make way for cattle; the container is made of the leaves
of a tropical tree.
o This deforestation and subsequent cattle ranching results in soil
erosion, which will quickly make the land barren and virtually
useless.
· The oat patty stands for the grain that, instead of being fed to
people, was fed to cattle. Twenty pounds of grain fed to cows yield
only one pound of beef.
· The cow pie buns (yes, real cow patty) signify the incredible amount
of wastes produced by cows that burdens the environment and
contributes to water pollution and global warming. The average cow
produces 47 pounds of manure every 24 hours, and produces methane,
which is a far worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, 24 times
worse.
o On the bun are representatives of the species lost to deforestation,
and the chronic overuse of agricultural antibiotics, promoting drug
resistant strains of viruses and bacteria.
