Breaking News From PETA.org

PETA’s latest undercover video reveals horrific cruelty to animals at a Tyson slaughterhouse in Alabama (Tyson Foods is a major supplier of KFC). A PETA investigator documented chickens who had their bodies mutilated by malfunctioning machinery, birds who had their heads torn off by hand, and others who were scalded to death, all while still completely conscious and able to feel pain.

For more information, to watch the video, and to find out how you can help stop this, visit TorturedByTyson.com.

Terrific news! Thanks to all of your calls, faxes, and e-mails last week, our U.S. House of Representatives voted 249-159 in favor of the Rahall-Whitfield Amendment to the Interior Appropriations Bill to prohibit the slaughter of our wild horses! (See previous alert below.)

Now, its time to urge our U.S. Senate to do the same!

WHAT YOU CAN DO!

For NY STATE residents (out-of-towners, see below), please contact:

 1) ANN CAVAGHAN at Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's office @ ann_gavaghan@clinton.senate.gov  Politely ask Ann to urge Senator Clinton to become a co-sponsor of Bill S. 576, “the bill that would restore prohibitions on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros.” (That’s all you have to say!)

 2) RYAN McCONAGHY at Senator Chuck Schumer's office @ 202 224 8373 or at Ryan_McConaghy@Schumer.Senate.Gov  Politely ask Ryan to urge Senator Schumer to become a co-sponsor of Bill S. 576, “the bill that would restore prohibitions on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros.” (Again, that’s all you have to say!)

For those of you living OUTSIDE of NY State, please visit www.hsus.org/leglookup to find out who are your two Federal Senators & their D.C. contact info. Then, ask to speak with the legislative staffer in each office who handles animal protection issues. Politely ask each staffer to urge your Senator to become a co-sponsor of S. 576, the bill that would restore prohibitions on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros.” (As I’ve suggested above.)

Stop the brutal slaughter of America's wild horses!

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/wild_horses/gu5uisrf5j3mtd??source=gac4de

Wild horses, a beloved and cherished symbol of our nation's heritage, have been protected from sale and slaughter for over 30 years.  However, a stealth amendment  -- snuck into a massive budget bill at the end of last year -- has allowed these horses to be commercially sold once again.

In recent weeks, at least 41 wild mustangs were sold by the government and then, within days,  resold to an Illinois slaughterhouse. We cannot let this continue. Take action today to help save these majestic animals.

Congress will be considering the Rahall-Whitfield amendment to ensure that tax dollars are never used for sales of wild horses that could lead to their slaughter. This week, when this amendment is being considered, we must reach every single member of the U.S. House of Representatives and secure their votes for the Rahall-Whitfield amendment.

1. Take action. Contact your U.S. Representative and urge him or her to vote YES on the Rahall-Whitfield amendment. Click here to contact your Representative now.

2. Make a call. This amendment is going up for a vote this Thursday, May 19th.  Please take a moment to make a short phone call urging your Representative to vote yes on the Rahall-Whitfield amendment. (Not sure what to say? Click here.)  Here's your Representative's contact information:

Representative Connie Mack
(202) 225-2536

3. Spread the word. Every single U.S. Representative needs to hear from us.  Ask your friends and family to call their Representatives as well. Click here to tell five friends to take action now.

Knowing that 41 beautiful wild mustangs have already been slaughtered is simply devastating.  Please, stand with us and do everything you can to spare the lives of these iconic and majestic wild horses.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of animals,

Wayne Pacelle

KFC Campaign Continues
After secret meetings between top KFC executives and PETA and a six-week campaign hiatus to give KFC time to prepare an agreed-upon animal welfare action plan based on the recommendations of five world-renowned scientists, KFC has completely ignored the proposal of the experts and has offered, instead, a “plan” that implements not a single one of the experts’ recommendations. As a result, PETA is declaring a “month of action” against KFC.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People who adhere strictly to raw food vegetarian diets are thin but have surprisingly robust bones, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
Although nutritionists and the food industry have warned that a diet without dairy foods can lead to the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis, the team at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found the vegans they studied had many of the signs of strong bones.

"We think it's possible these people don't have increased risk of fracture but that their low bone mass is related to the fact that they are lighter because they take in fewer calories," Dr. Luigi Fontana, who led the study, said in a statement.

"Raw food vegetarians believe in eating only plant-derived foods that have not been cooked, processed, or otherwise altered from their natural state," Fontana's team wrote in this week's issue of the Archives of Internal medicine.

"Because of their low calorie and low protein intake, raw food vegetarians have a low body mass index (BMI) and a low total body fat content. It is well documented that a low BMI and weight loss are strongly associated with low bone mass and increased fracture risk, while obesity protects against osteoporosis."

Fontana's team studied 18 strict raw food vegans aged 33 to 85. All ate a diet that included unprepared foods such vegetables, fruits, nuts, and sprouted grains. They had been on this diet for an average of 3.6 years.

The team compared them to 18 more average Americans. The raw food group had an average body mass index of 20.5, while the average group were slightly overweight with a BMI of 25.

BMI is an internationally accepted measurement of height to weight, and a BMI of 18.5 to 24 is considered the healthy range.

Fontana expected the vegans to have low vitamin D levels because they avoid all animal products including dairy. But in fact their vitamin D levels were "markedly higher" than average.

Vitamin D is made by the skin when the body is exposed to sunlight and is key to keeping strong bones. It is added to milk and other foods because it is so important.

"These people are clever enough to expose themselves to sunlight to increase their concentrations of vitamin D," Fontana said.

And the vegans had low levels of C-reactive protein, an inflammatory molecule that is becoming linked with the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic disease.

Furthermore, they had lower levels of IGF-1, a growth factor linked to risk of breast and prostate cancer.

Fontana does not advocate a raw food diet. But he said that to lower the risk of cancer and heart disease people should eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Urgent: Stop Cruel Taser Tests on Pigs at UW-Madison

University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor John Webster plans to conduct an experiment in which live pigs will be shocked with Taser stun guns.

Using a $500,000 taxpayer-funded grant provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Webster will attach electrodes directly to the pigs’ skin and implant catheters near their hearts to measure the voltage of the Taser shocks. He also plans to use a “super-Taser” device to induce heart arrhythmia, as well as applying overdoses of cocaine to the pigs, ostensibly to mimic the effects of fleeing human suspects high on drugs.

What makes this experiment even more outrageous is the fact that similar Taser studies have been conducted with pigs (and dogs) on at least four other occasions. There are ample human data available for study, as these stun guns have been widely used by law-enforcement agencies for several years.

Experts in the field agree that the best way to determine whether Tasers are safe is to study the data gathered from the many cases in which people have suffered adverse affects or died as a result of Taser shocks.

Please contact University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor John D. Wiley and politely urge him to put an immediate end to this utterly unnecessary and ill-conceived experiment and return the grant to the Department of Justice:

Please also contact Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and politely ask him to put an immediate halt to the Taser experiments at UW-Madison and to end all funding for laboratory experiments involving the use of live animals:

The largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet
will begin in just a few days. By the end of this year's hunt,
more than 300,000 seals will have been brutally killed--many of
them babies as young as 12 days old. Some of them will have been
skinned while still conscious and able to feel pain. Stand with
me today and stop the seal hunt forever by joining the Canadian
seafood boycott. To learn more about the hunt and sign the
pledge, click here: http://www.ProtectSeals.org .

Once you've signed the pledge, you'll be able to spot Canadian
seafood by using HSUS's downloadable pocket guide to spotting
seafood. You can also sign up for Seal Watch, a frequent email
that HSUS will send out during the hunt featuring stories and
images.

Thanks for joining me in ending this awful hunt.
